Celebrating Community and Culture

Jambo Family,

I can’t believe we are almost in 2025. School year 2024 has been nothing less then fantastic!!!  As the calendar year winds down, I reflect on my ascension to Executive Director which has been quite a whirlwind of amazing learning, sweet connections, and great experiences. As I recall our first day parent brunch and meeting the new Little Sun People, what a wonderful way to start off a school year in community with delicious food, some nerves and lots of smiles.  In October we came together again to celebrate the Harvest with our children, so much fun and creativity to behold.  Then came our Umoja Karamu in November, we welcomed in our Dads, Babas, Grandpas, Uncles and Brothers, it was a night to remember as we celebrated the men in our community and they wore the beautiful aprons created by the children.

Now I look ahead to Kwanzaa 2024, this will be many of the children’s first time on stage and we can’t wait to see their brilliance shine through. I look forward to celebrating with our families and friends on Thursday December 26, as the staff, families and children continue to grow in culture, community and love. What a great way to kick off the Kwanzaa season on Umoja-Unity with the community that brings me so much joy and purpose as we focus in the principles of Kwanzaa and continue to embody them everyday in our daily lives and especially at Little Sun People for our children and families.

In loving solidarity for a prosperous New Year for us all,

Mama Aaliyah

LITTLE SUN PEOPLE FUNDRAISER
Giving Tuesday

In a climate where books about Black communities are banned, Black history is being excised from school curricula (to the extent it is already in there), and school funding faces an existential threat, Little Sun People remains steadfast in its commitment to providing an African-centered culturally-responsive education - by any means necessary!

Little Sun People, Inc. (LSP) is a non-profit early childhood education center that provides culturally responsive education to preschool learners in Brooklyn. For over 40 years, LSP has brought to life the contributions and experience of people of African descent in the context of an academically rigorous curriculum that prepares our students holistically for what lies ahead in their varied academic and life journeys. This combination is precisely what makes an LSP education a high-quality early childhood program.

Understanding the need for children to receive a culturally responsive education beyond preschool years, LSP has embarked on its newest chapter by offering its first kindergarten class and elementary afterschool program!

If 180 of the people receiving this newsletter - a small fraction of the number of families positively impacted by LSP - donated $100, we would hit our mission-critical funding goal for this campaign. Can we count on you to be 1 of 180?
